Advice on SQL Server 2005 vs. Express Edition w/ Advanced Services

I've been using SQL Server 2005 Std. for my development work on a laptop w/ 2 GHz Celeron and 768 Mb RAM. Now that Express Edition has Reporting Services and Full-Text Search, would I be wise to just use it instead? I actually have both on my machine since Express Edition installed with VS 2005 Standard. Also, if I uninstall SQL Server 2005 Std. what will I lose? Thanks in advance.

-Mike

It depends what you want to do. SQL Express Advanced Services is not the same as Std, Std has more features (OLAP, Integration Services) richer features (better SSMS, better reporting including report builder) it also has less restrictions on memory, procs etc.

If you are only using this for development you should also be able to use Developer Edition which is < 50USD but is Enterprise Edition, with a no production use clause.

|||

I've decided to uninstall SQL Server 2005 Std. and try to work with Express w/ Advanced Services. I believe it will do all I need. I'm more concerned with performance on my laptop than features like OLAP, etc. If I gain any incite after using it for a while, I'll post back here. Thanks.

Adventureworks version 631 error

I installed Sql Server 2005 Express Edition on an XP system thismorning and tried to attach Adventureworks, but got an error messagestating:

The database 'Adventureworks' cannot be opend because itis version 631. This server supports version 612 andearlier. A downgrade path is not supported.

Since both SqlServer 2005 Express Edition, Management Studio, and the Adventureworksdatabase have all be downloaded within the past three days, I amastonished that there is a compatibility issue. I have runAdventureworks on other systems without problems. Any suggestionson how to proceed?

Hi Moonshadow,

Where did you download that "Adventureworks" ?

Please make sure you are downloading the correct AdventureWorks database for SQL Server 2005. The CodePlex website contains two versions of the database, one for SQL Server 2008 and one for SQL Server 2005. If you are viewing the AdventureWorks database download release for SQL Server 2008 you must click "SQL Server 2005 SP2a" in the Releases box on the right hand side. You can also use the following link to download the SQL Server 2005 version directly at:http://www.codeplex.com/MSFTDBProdSamples/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=4004.

Detailed information, see:http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1966875&SiteID=1

thanks

Hi B.C. When I originally searched for the DB I was redirected tothe Codeplex site where the current default download version is for SqlServer 2008, hence version incompatibility. I tracked down andinstalled the 2005 version at Codeplex and all is well.

AdventureWorks Install

I am using sqlserver 2005 express edition and have downloaded the
AdventureWorksDB.msi. I have installed it and it created 3 files:
AdventureWorks.mdf (~ 2MB), AdventureWorks_Data.mdf (~ 164MB) and
AdventureWorks_log.idf (~1MB). When I added the database to the sqlserver,
no tables appear under system tables. Is there something I am missing here?
No, it's normal in SQL Server 2005. System tables are hidden and you can't
see or modify them directly.

adventureworks application error

I am using ms sql server 2005 Enterprise Evaluation Edition, and I can use the other sample dtabases, like pubs, northwind, but not adventureworks
I tried diffrent ways,
I am very new to this, and I try before I ask, and I had to give up,
Here is what I did
when I installed adventureworks it was like 166 mb. big
And when I tried to use it with visual studio, every time I want to drag a table from: data connections/adventureworks, and try to veiw it in borwser it gives me an application server error, and invalid object name

with northwind database works fine

then I tried executing instawdb.sql located C:\Progam files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Samples\AdventureWorks OLTP, from Sql server management studio,
And it finishes with errors, and is only 122 mb. big

This line in red:
Msg 4861, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Cannot bulk load because the file "C:\Archivos de programa\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\DATA\AWDB\Address.csv" could not be opened. Operating system error code 3(error not found).

and at the end this:
DBCC SHRINKDATABASE: File ID 1 of database ID 6 was skipped because the file does not have enough free space to reclaim.

last night I was thinking wether it might be my OS( usning windows xp), or server evalution edition

Does anybody know something about this?
I already google search and only found one person with the same problem, but there was no solution posted

You can download an installer for the AdventureWorks database or the new smaller AdventureWorksLT database here

Advanced functions in SQL Express

Hi,

I would like exploring Reporting Services associated with SQL Express Edition so i tried installing "SQLEXPR_ADV_.EXE" the package available on download SQL site, but after having selected Reporting Services option I've got an error explaining that component "sqlserver2005_bc.msi" is to be changed.

As this component is part of "SQLEXPR_ADV_.EXE" package is there anybody knowing an alternative solution ?

Are you worrying about that the sqlserver2005_bc.msi component will be changed, so that repaire/modify the changed component will fail? I found the simliar issue in the instruction of SQL2005 sp1, which provides a workaround. You can take look at here:

Adressing memory above 1,7 Gb in SQL

Hi everyone,
We are using W2k3 standard x 64 edition in combination with SQL2000 standard

W2k with SQL2000 systems are also in use.
These machines have 4Gb of RAM, but i can't seem to get SQL to use more than

Nothing works, am i doing something strange or wrong ?

How do you check the memory used ? Performance monitor or Task Manager?
Task Manager will show you a wrong value if you use more than 2 Gb of
RAM.
Also how much memory is used by other Apps and/or OS.

I have developed an application in vb.net 2005 Standard Edition and is running fine in my local machine. The executed version of the same application i tried to run in other machine and getting an error as follows :-

" Unable to install application. The application requires the assembly ADODB Version 7.0.3300.0 be installed in the global assembly cache (GAC) first "

Can you somebody help me to solve this problem.

Thanks

ADO.NET SP throws ArgumentException after migrating to SQL 2005 Standard - UPDATE 2 - FIXED

I just migrated a database from SQL 2000 Developer Edition on W2k Server to a production machine running SQL 2005 Standard on W2k3 Server Standard. A Web Service was also migrated from .NET 1.1 on the development machine to .NET 2.0 on the production machine.

Since the migration, a stored procedure that worked on SQL 2000/.NET 1.1 now throws a System.ArgumentException: "No mapping exists from object type System.RuntimeType to a known managed proider native type."

This occurs with a date value - the stored procedure is filled from XML data the Web Service receives from the client program by a generic subroutine that recognizes the applicable table names and primary key column names, selecting the appropriate stored procedure to use, but may or may not have data to update for each field. I have tried explicitly setting the SQLDBType for the parameter as the parametercollection is filled, but still get the ArgumentException. I also tried changing the parameter type to varchar(20), and having the stored procedure convert it to datetime, but still got the exception.

I know the ultimate solution will probably be to build the data Web Service within SQL 2005, but what can I do to get this working until I have time for that conversion?

Thanks for any help.

Darrell Escola

UPDATE - I was able to use the stored procedures to manually update the database using data that should have passed through the web service, so the problem is within the web service on .NET 2.0 - I think 2.0 is much stricter on data types than was 1.1. The SPs create dynamic SQL that is then executed - I know this is not the best security, hence my eventual interest in creating an end-point within SQL 2005 to handle the data in a more secure manner.

I finally got the web service to update through the stored procedure. I was able to access the stored procedure by specifically casting the data types for each parameter using a subroutine similar to that shown below, but the web service was still throwing an exception on the output value type, which I use to get the actual primary key value for the new record, so the off-line client can properly map its dependent records to the proper key value before inserting those dependent records:

Dim newID As SQLTypes.SQLInt32

I added a subroutine to determine the data type for each column used in the update:

Private Sub AddSPParameter(ByRef cmd as SQLClient.SQLCommand, ByVal paramName as String, ByVal fieldValue as Object)

If paramName = "<stringColName1>" Or paramName = "<stringColName...>" Then

cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue(Ctype(Cstr(fieldValue), SQLTypes.SQLString).DbType = DbType.String

ElseIf paramName = "<otherTypeColName1>" Or paramName.IndexOf("...") > 0 Or paramName.EndsWith("...") Then

cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue(Ctype(Cstr(fieldValue), SQLTypes.SQL<otherType>).DbType = DbType.<otherType>

ElseIf ...

End If

This subroutine determines the column data type by matches on the column name, and then explicitly casting the parameter value to the applicable database data type.

I also had to explicitly cast the Return Value:

cmd.Parameters.AddWithValue("@.ReturnValue", Ctype(0, SQLTypes.SQLInt32)).DbType = SqlDbType.Int

cmd.Parameters("@.ReturnValue").Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue

Lesson learned: Explicitly type all data values used.

ADO initialization fails on W2003

OVERVIEW:
ADO initialization fails on W2003 Server, Standard Edition.
This is a new system.
This is the first time this app has been compiled or run on this system.
The app runs fine on all other servers I've tried it on.
What should I check?
Is anyone else able to run ADO routines against OLE 5.2?
Thanks,
Brad.
DETAILS:
OLE32.dll v.5.2.3790.250
OLEAUT32.dll v.5.2.3790.0
Tracing into the code, I get into
_WStrAsg("", "'ISAUTOINCREMENT'");
which calls SysReAllocStringLen. This fails with an access violation.
SysReAllocStringLen is a call into OLEAUT32.dll.
All the OLE32 dll look to be updated. They are newer than anything
on any of my XP systems.
I have a new test project that uses ADODB and it *doesn't* fail.
Yes, it does go through the same code just as nice as you could want.
The same app is deployed an running on dozens of other systems.
None are as new as this one.
So my guess is that it has to be something about the way the new
system is set up.
My next step is to start tearing down a copy of my project. But I'm
not terribly hopeful.
Thanks,
Brad.Long shot but is the bad project compiled on the same library as the working
one. Also, have you updated to the latest mdac + fixes.

The first thing I checked was MDAC, and yes it is 2.8.
I thought last night that perhaps it is a 2003 thing,
but no, we have had installations for months on 2003 Server
with no problems.
Same libraries. Tried the debug versions of the libraries in both exe's
with same results.

Thanks for the reply.
The way it was acting reminded me of memory corruption,
but I couldn't see how that could be since no custom code
had run yet.
Turns out it was an unrelated dll improperly installed.
Reinstalling that to solve another problem, solved this problem.
It wasn't an ADO thing or WideStr thing at all.

Admin password for new installtion

Hi,

I just installed VS.NET 2005 on my computer and along the way SQL Server Express edition got installed too. What is the default sa password right out of the box? I actually want to use Windows authentication but was not able to set my domain account in there w/ administrative rights. I'd appreciate some help here.

Thanks,

Sam

My guess is that the default installation here uses Windows authentication and does not set an sa password. You can use any of the management tools (Management Tools Express in Express Advanced) or T-SQL to set the sa password and change the authentication method.

Thanks,
Sam Lester (MSFT)
